New Method Improves Lab Pesticide Testing

By Tabitha Whitson,
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities

The Laboratory Services Division (of Charlotte-Mecklenberg Utilities) recently hosted Jay Rowden from Horizon Technology, Inc. to give individualized training on new technology that will improve pesticide testing. Over a three-day period, Laboratory Services lab analysts were given training on the SPE-DEX 4790 Automated Extraction System for preventative maintenance, method set-up, system operation and troubleshooting.

Use of this advanced technology now gives an additional method for pesticide extractions that speeds the process, improves recoveries and reduces analyst exposures to chemicals used. The vendor aided in developing methods for both water and wastewater monitoring.

This training was a great experience for our analysts and will increase the service level of the Laboratory Services Division. Horizon Technology, Inc. will return to the Environmental Services Facility in the near future to expand the training and present a seminar. We would like to give a big thank you to Horizon Technology, Inc. and Jay Rowden.
