FEATURED APPLICATIONS:
Three New Applications Focus on the DryVap® Evaporation Concentrator System

New The Complete Evaporation of Methanol for LC Applications Using the DryVap® Concentration System
The extraction of samples for specialized liquid chromatography (LC) applications is frequently challenged by the need for a very particular solvent, or mix of solvents which are required to achieve the correct chromatography. These methods typically extract the analytes of interest into a water soluble solvent such as methanol and concentrate the extracts to total dryness before reconstituting the residue in another solvent. The evaporation step can be done using commercially available concentration apparatuses such as water baths or nitrogen gas sparging. However, these require constant analyst intervention to prevent the residue from being carbonized or otherwise thermally degraded. The ideal concentrator would allow for the unattended, rapid concentration of a water soluble solvent without the risk of damage to the extract. Learn More >>

New Enhancing Recoveries and Maximizing Throughput of Semi-Volatile Organics Using the Direct-to-GC-Vial Concentrator Tube and DryVap® Concentrator System
This purpose of this study is to determine how the Direct-to-GC vial concentrator tube and the DryVap® Concentrator System can optimize the recoveries for both low and high boiling point semi-volatile compounds. Learn More >>

New Concentrating PCB Congeners 10 Thousand Fold with the Horizon Technology DryVap® Concentration System
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are found throughout the environment and are recognized as a serious health threat.PCBs, dioxins, and furans must be detected at the lowest levels possible. The use of selective and sensitive detectors such as the ECD and high resolution Mass Spec, and enrichment techniques such as Kuderna-Danish concentrators and rotary evaporators are prescribed for environmental sample analysis. These experiments focused on the recovery levels of PCB congeners after concentrating spiked solutions 10 thousand fold with the DryVap® Concentrator System developed by Horizon Technology. PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT:

DryVap® Evaporation Concentration System

This innovative solvent evaporation system is the first of
its kind to automatically Dry and Evaporate liquid
samples for GC and GC/MS applications. The organic solvent is automatically dried of any residual water, using Horizon's patented DryDisk® membranes and then transferred into the evaporation vessel. A unique combination of heat, a sparge gas, and vacuum is used to gently evaporate the sample. Each variable can be optimized, to maximize the recovery of the analytes of interest.

Designed for unattended operation, the DryVap system can process up to 6 samples simultaneously, and independently. The evaporation tubes will handle sample volumes from 200mL to 2mL, making the DryVap ideal for both LLE and SPE.

DryDisk® Separation Membrane
50mL Disposable Barrel

The DryDisk® Separation Membrane 50mL Barrel is a disposable sample preparation device that provides a fast and simple approach for removing residual water from non-polar solvents. The DryDisk® membrane replaces the conventional sodium sulphate drying technique. The barrel is made from high purity HDPE (high density polyethylene) and has a GORE TEX® PTFE membrane embedded inside. The membrane is supported by an inert polymeric laminate for maximum mechanical integrity.

TIPS AND TRICKS WITH TOM:

Theory of Operation of the Thermistors (liquid Sensors) on the SPE-DEX® 3000XL/1000XL Extractor Systems

By: Tom Nesbitt, Technical Support Specialist

Last month I talked about the sensors on the SPE- DEX 4790 Extractor, this time I will discuss the sensor on the SPE- DEX 3000/1000 Extractor. On the 3000/1000 Extractor, the Thermistor, hereafter referred to as the "sensor", is used to monitor the presence, or absence of liquid, in this case the water sample.

For example, when the water sample is being dispensed into the disk holder, the sensor is in air, and is "hot". As the water sample level rises, it will come in contact with the sensor, which now "cools" the sensor. This state change from hot to cool is monitored by the 3000/1000 software and can be observed on the controller (Refer to TT93).
