Global concern about the concentration of chlorine compounds found
in the natural environment is growing. Chlorine and residual
oxidants are easily dissipated and their effect on the environment
is of lesser significance than the potential toxicity of the
organohalides. Organohalides readily bioaccumulate and are
persistent in the environment. Once they work their way into the
food chain their accumulated effect is greatest on animals at the
top. Organohalides have been linked with tumours and cancers, birth
defects and reproduction problems.
