IN THE NEWS:

What the Nose Knows

There was a wonderful talk this week at the Environmental Measurement Symposium Conference in Washington, DC (www.NEMC.us). The talk stretched my mind about chemistry and detection techniques. Mark Ruefenacht, founder of Dogs4Diabetics (http://www.dogs4diabetics.com/) gave an interesting plenary address about dogs who can assist diabetics in detecting when the blood sugar is too low (can rapidly be fatal) or too high (can cause damage, such as blindness). Mark is a metrologist by trade and in volunteering to train guide dogs for the blind stumbled upon this characteristic when his own blood sugar dipped to low levels while he was sleeping and guide dog in-training insisted on waking him, allowing him to correct the situation. What other techniques can be considered to give us such sophisticated performance, that we may never thought about before?

DryVap with Solvent Trap SVOC

New Solvent Reclaimer System

Horizon Technology is pleased to announce an improved version of the solvent reclaimer system. Known as the Solvent Trap SVOC, the system couples with the DryVap® to provide a smooth workflow of solvent drying-evaporation-solvent trapping. The system can recover 90-95% dichloromethane (DCM) evaporated from 6, 180-mL samples simultaneously, using vacuum and an auxilliary chiller. Something to consider if your state is becoming more concerned about laboratory air emissions!

We are pleased to announce two new XcelVap® Evaporation System technical notes on the Horizon Technology website

Concentrating Phenolic Compounds using the XcelVap Evaporation/Concentration System (TN0031405_01). This note describes the evaporation and analysis of phenolic compounds from dichloromethane solution, with excellent recovery. Click here to receive your copy.

The XcelVap Evaporation/Concentration System Pressure Profiling (TN0021405_01). This note describes the pressure profiling feature of the system and the advantages it provides, through several examples. Click here to receive your copy.
