What is oil and grease? Oil and Grease is a simple measurement that can give an indication of water quality showing a variety of possible pollutants. EPA Methods 1664A & 1664B were developed to determine the amount of n-Hexane Extractable Material (HEM) and Silica Gel Treated n-Hexane Extractable Material (SGT-HEM) that exist within a water sample. The HEM or SGT-HEM that is extracted contains a mix of various hydrocarbons usually within the semi-volatile range with a boiling point greater than 85oC. The amount of HEM or SGT-HEM is determined gravimetrically. The analogous European method is ISO 11349. Both the SPE-DEX 4790 and the SPE-DEX 3100 (dedicated to Oil and Grease measurement) are compliant with these methods and application notes demonstrate the parameters required and the performance obtained.
