Phthalate esters are added to polyvinyl chloride (PVC) to make it flexible. Adipate, a nonphthalate ester, is sometimes used as an alternate platicizer. Both esters readily leach from PVC and are present in the environment in relatively large amounts. Considered by many to be endocrine disruptors, studies have linked phthalates to reproductive problems in rats and damaged sexual development in neonatal infants.
